Diesel is the lifeblood of your Island. The Ship, Cargo Ships, Vehicles, Rubber Maker, and Diesel Generator, all run on Diesel fuel. Initially, a Basic Distiller can crank out 24 Diesel per barrel of Crude Oil , but makes Waste Water and Exhaust.
Advanced Diesel, uses Steam (High) reforming of Crude Oil to produce petroleum distillates of various fractions determined by the average length of the Carbon chain. Distillation (Stage I) produces Medium Oil and the remainder Heavy Oil can be stored for later use and/or flared. Diesel is produced by the Distillation (Stage II), at a rate of 36 per barrel of Crude Oil and the remainder, Light Oil, can be further distilled in a Distillation (Stage III) to produce Naphtha and Fuel Gas, which can be processed into Rubber and even more... Diesel! Research of Biofuel or Naphtha Refining unlocks the Cracking Unit, which uses the addition of Hydrogen to Naphtha or later, Heavy Oil to make more Diesel. Furthermore, Fuel Gas and Oxygen can make more Diesel and Carbon Dioxide, as well. However, in a Chemical Plant with Ethanol and some Cooking Oil, Diesel is made sustainably on the Farm from Seeds. Bear in mind, farming Diesel uses much more labor and Water than refining Crude Oil.
Crude Oil is a finite resource that must be shipped in once you have depleted the Local Natural Resources.
