Graphite is a crafted material used in late-game production of Molten Iron, Molten Copper, Molten Glass, and Molten Silicon. It is made from Coal at a 1:2 ratio. With the exception of the Molten Silicon recipes, Graphite replaces Coal in recipes where it's used at a ratio which nets a substantial reduction in total usage of Coal.
As of version 0.4.7b you can not produce Graphite directly from Coal. Chemical Plant II only lists the other production recipe, with the use of Chlorine and additonal output of Sour Water
